College of Arts invited Prof. Fu Jingmin from School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University delivering a lecture titled Topic Selection in Translation Studies and Paper Publication on Dec. 1st, 2018. Sun Daman, Deputy dean of College of Arts chaired the lecture, which was attended by Wang Xinbo and Han Shuqin, Deputy deans of College of Arts, Guo Yueqin, director of Postgraduate Foreign Language Teaching Department, Li Yanyun, director of English Language&Literature Department and Chun Liu, director of Teaching Affairs Office.
Firstly, Prof. Fu Jingmin said we must put originality on priority in topic selection, seek innovation based on previous researches and do not repeat others’ academic achievements.
Secondly, Prof. Fu held that topic selection must embrace our own context of academic research. He suggested us paying attention to academic trends, continuously reading a relevant journal, and finally positioning our research orientation.
Thirdly, he advised us to clarify the category of our topic selection, to understand the skopos of translation studies and to highlight feasibility. And theory must be combined into practical application.
Fourthly, he told us that the topic selection must target dissertation writing, which serves as the final index to our academic achievements. Also, self-evaluation and assessment from other scholars are of equal importance in guiding our academic work.
Additionally, Prof. Fu also gave some tips on how to make our dissertations more acceptable and more likely to be published.
Throughout this lecture, Prof. Fu Jingmin helped us further understand how to select a dissertation topic and how to complete the work efficiently. His ideas are cherish-able in our thesis writing and paper publishing.
